Health & safety coordination
ArchitectANA provides health and safety coordination services for construction, renovation, conversion and extension projects throughout Belgium. The purpose of this mission is to identify risks arising from the involvement of several contractors on the same construction site and to incorporate preventive measures from the design stage through to completion of the works.
Health and safety coordination contributes to a safer construction process by assessing interactions between the different parties and establishing appropriate preventive measures.
The role of the Health and Safety Coordinator
The Health and Safety Coordinator is involved in projects falling within the regulations applicable to temporary or mobile construction sites.
The role includes assessing project-related risks, coordinating preventive measures between the different parties and preparing the required safety documentation according to the nature and scale of the project.
Coordination may cover two distinct stages:
- Design-stage coordination — Health and safety considerations are integrated into the design process to anticipate foreseeable risks associated with architectural, technical and construction decisions.
- Construction-stage coordination — During the works, the coordinator follows the development of the construction site and the coordination of preventive measures between the different contractors.
Our health and safety coordination services
Depending on the project and the applicable requirements, our services may include several documents and interventions.
- Risk assessment — Identification of risks arising from the different construction phases and interactions between contractors.
- Safety and Health Plan — Preparation and updating of the document defining the principal preventive measures applicable during construction.
- Design-stage coordination — Assessment of architectural and technical choices that could affect safety during construction or future maintenance works.
- Construction site visits — Periodic inspections to review site organisation, identify potentially hazardous situations and formulate the necessary observations.
- Coordination reports — Communication of safety observations and preventive measures to the relevant parties.
- Coordination journal — Maintenance of the coordination journal where required for the project.
- Post-Intervention File — Preparation of the documentation containing information required to safely carry out future maintenance, renovation or alteration works.
Safety from the design stage
Effective health and safety coordination begins before contractors arrive on site.
Many risks can be reduced through appropriate design decisions concerning access, construction methods, work at height, prefabricated elements, excavations and future building maintenance.
Integrating health and safety considerations from the early stages therefore helps prevent risks rather than addressing them only once construction has started.
Coordination during construction
Construction sites constantly evolve, and several contractors may work simultaneously or successively.
Particular attention is given to interactions between activities and to situations involving work at height, scaffolding, openings, excavations, construction equipment, temporary installations, site circulation and collective protection measures.
Relevant observations are communicated to the parties concerned so that appropriate corrective or preventive measures can be implemented.
Integrated with architecture
Where ArchitectANA also provides the architectural services for the project, coordination between the different roles facilitates the integration of health and safety principles throughout both design and construction.
Safety considerations can therefore be assessed alongside architectural, technical and construction decisions.
This creates greater continuity between design, construction planning and execution.
Health and safety coordination throughout Belgium
ArchitectANA provides health and safety coordination services throughout Wallonia, Brussels and Flanders for residential, professional and property development projects.
The precise scope of each appointment depends on the nature of the project, the organisation of the construction site and the applicable regulatory requirements.
Common questions
- When is a health and safety coordinator required?
- The role applies to projects covered by the temporary or mobile construction site regulations, typically as soon as more than one contractor works on the same site. We assess each project to establish which obligations apply.
- What is the difference between design and site coordination?
- Design-stage coordination builds safety into the design, to limit foreseeable risks arising from architectural and construction choices. Site coordination runs during the works: following the progress of the site and checking that preventive measures are coordinated between the parties.
- What is the subsequent-works file for?
- It gathers the information needed to carry out future maintenance, alteration or renovation safely. It stays useful long after the site closes, on every later intervention in the building.
Does your project require a Health and Safety Coordinator?
New construction, renovation, conversion or extension: send us the details of your project so that we can determine the appropriate health and safety coordination requirements.
